An idea is sprouting. It is coming from origami, Chemo Today, abstract painting, acrylic painting and death. In Chemo Today I made small square boxes and called them prayer boxes. Floating squares in my paintings also represent prayers. There has been a lot of death around us. So this pink pyramid is an early try. The white pyramid was working out how to make a pyramid. My idea is to do a series of reliquaries, for the people we have lost. However it may be too sad. Gregg and I cried as we thought of the stuff that might remind us of my Dad. An old pickup filled with tools, pecan pickers, PVC fittings, a chunk of concrete and a few empty beer cans. No matter what, they will give me plenty of room to “speriment”. I have found out that it is not easy to make and equilateral triangle. I made me a 60 degree angle, and I can get close.
Changes to “Changes”
I am painting oils over these panels. You can put oils on top of acrylics, but you can’t go the other way, without peeling paint. I thought I’d change a lot, but mostly there were areas that seemed thin to me. Who knows, when this dries I may not like it either. However, I’ll take my cue from Willem DeKoonig, who worked on one of his “Woman” paintings for over 10 years. When we had llamas, you learned that you couldn’t let them win over bad behavior. You had to correct it. Same thing with paintings.
addiction
I honestly tried to do this painting in acrylics, but, damn. I didn’t repaint it with oils, just some highlights and zigs. I was listening to Dylan singing love songs. It hit me what my theme is. I’m a little dim. My theme is women, and even these spirals represent life. I have a suggestion for an alternate title. Instead of “Changes”, how about “Change(s) of Life”. It made ME laugh!
Horizontal
Another spiral.
Spring
I’ve been working on spirals all winter, and I think I’m getting somewhere! Also I’ve conquered my fear of acrylics. I have to investigate varnish, these babies are as dry as toast!
Detail
This is a detail, the upper right quad. I’m going to name this piece “Changes” because my original idea was about life and death. No matter how much we prefer the familiar, we each face changes and there is nothing we can do to stop them.
Horseback
A girl on a paint pony galloped by my studio window. Spring break in the country!
Title
I know all the COOL artists title their work before they start. Soooo together. Which may explain my struggle. I have spirals and the Earth, but no pithy title.
Spring
Thru the winter I worked in acrylics because I have a propane heater. It does NOT like fumes! I believe I’ve learned enough to no longer be afraid of them, but I will go back to oils until next winter. I continue to explore spirals as well. I’ve moved away from helixes. There are lots of different kinds of spirals.
acrylic on paper
I continue exploring spirals.
