How I Made This
It has taken me a long time to forget all the proper ways to make “art”. Now I begin with an idea and wrestle with it. My mantra through this trying process is “This is my painting.” I am lazy and tentative and want to quit early on. Often when trying to fix one small element, then the whole painting changes. And changes again. I have adopted a mnemonic to help me along my way. ICU is for intensity, complexity, and unity. When I feel that I have wrestled this painting to the floor, stabbed it, and brought it back to life (a Willem De Kooning idea), then I photograph it, varnish it and call it done.
